2G and 3G status at Vodafone Italia
| Network | Status | Date | Confidence | Sources and notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2G | Planned | 2030 | low | wirelesslogic.com, smartworld.it Vendor tracker only: Wireless Logic says Vodafone Italy keeps 2G live until end of 2030 for critical IoT, with dismantling from Jan 2031. Italian press (Aug 2026) confirms 2G stays active in Italy for M2M and rural voice but gives no operator date. A GSMA-based tracker (June 2024) listed no 2G plan. Vodafone Italia is now part of Fastweb + Vodafone (Swisscom). |
| 3G | Switched off | February 2021 | high | mondomobileweb.it, agcom.it First Italian operator to switch off 3G: started 25 Jan 2021, completed end of Feb 2021; confirmed by AGCOM (Sep 2026). 2G remains for non-4G devices. |
Confidence is high when the operator or the regulator states the date, medium when several independent sources agree, low otherwise. We recheck every month.
What it means for IoT devices on Vodafone Italia
- 2G devices keep working until the shutdown (2030). Replace 2G-only devices before that date; once the network closes, they lose service on Vodafone Italia.
- 3G fallback no longer works on Vodafone Italia. Devices built for 3G (UMTS) or that fall back to it lose service; 4G devices with 2G fallback are not affected by this closure.
- For new devices, choose 4G-based technologies: LTE Cat-1 bis, LTE-M or NB-IoT where the network offers them.
- Foreign SIMs in Italy: permanent roaming is governed by the EU roaming regulation, which generally allows it under wholesale agreements between operators. Details on the Italy page.
An M2M.global IoT SIM is not tied to a single network in a country, and its data can reach your cloud without the internet through private delivery.
