IoT connectivity in Slovenia
Updated
In Slovenia, permanent roaming is governed by the EU roaming regulation, which generally allows it under wholesale agreements between operators. Of the 3 mobile operators we track there, 0 have switched off 2G and 2 3G; the status of 2 networks is still unclear, as of 26 October 2026. Sources are listed below each table.
Permanent roaming
EU/EEA rule. M2M falls within the EU Roaming Regulation, which leaves permanent roaming for M2M to commercial wholesale agreements that may include clauses against it; BEREC concluded in March 2025 that no further regulation was needed, and most member states permit it, Belgium being the main exception.

2G and 3G shutdowns by operator
| Operator | Network | Status | Date | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 Slovenija | 2G | Planned | 2030 | korewireless.com, a1.si KORE (and emnify) list 2030-12-31; no A1 announcement found. A1's network page still shows a 2G coverage layer and GSM speeds. Wireless Logic claims a 2G shutdown on 30 June 2024, which conflicts and was not verified. |
| A1 Slovenija | 3G | Switched off | 30 June 2023 | a1.si, korewireless.com A1 announced 3G switch-off on 30 June (release undated, spring 2023); KORE marks it finished on 2023-06-30. Voice falls back to 2G. |
| Telekom Slovenije | 2G | Unclear | none | No source found on Telekom Slovenije 2G plans (operator pages gave no date). |
| Telekom Slovenije | 3G | Switched off | September 2022 | sdxcentral.com, korewireless.com First Slovenian operator to close 3G, in September 2022 (KORE: 2022-09-30). |
| Telemach Slovenia | 2G | Unclear | none | No source found. Telemach's mobile network page shows only 3G/4G/5G coverage layers, so it is unclear whether a 2G layer is still operated. |
| Telemach Slovenia | 3G | No plan announced | none | sdxcentral.com, telemach.si In 2023 Telemach had not announced a 3G shutdown date; its 2026 network page still shows a 3G coverage layer. No newer plan found. |
What it means for IoT devices in Slovenia
- 2G still runs on some networks, but plan new devices on 4G-based technologies (LTE Cat-1bis, LTE-M or NB-IoT where available): 2G is being closed across the region.
- 3G is already gone on 2 networks: devices that fall back to 3G will lose service there.
- Private delivery works the same from Slovenia: device data reaches your cloud over private links. See private delivery.
