2G and 3G status at Swisscom
| Network | Status | Date | Confidence | Sources and notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2G | Switched off | April 2021 | medium | teltarif.de, teltarif.de Gradual GSM shutdown from 4 Jan 2021, complete switch-off targeted for mid-April 2021; a 2023 article refers to Swisscom as among the first to have switched 2G off. No Swisscom page opened for the exact day. |
| 3G | Switched off | 7 April 2026 | high | swisscom.ch, teltarif.de Step-by-step shutdown from end-2025 with final deactivation on 7 Apr 2026 (Swisscom); teltarif confirms 3G fully switched off in early April 2026. Earlier plan was end-2025. |
Confidence is high when the operator or the regulator states the date, medium when several independent sources agree, low otherwise. We recheck every month.
What it means for IoT devices on Swisscom
- 2G devices no longer connect to Swisscom. Trackers, alarms and meters that only speak GSM/GPRS need a 4G-based replacement, or a SIM that roams onto another network in Switzerland still running 2G.
- 3G fallback no longer works on Swisscom. Devices built for 3G (UMTS) or that fall back to it lose service; 4G devices with 2G fallback are not affected by this closure.
- For new devices, choose 4G-based technologies: LTE Cat-1 bis, LTE-M or NB-IoT where the network offers them.
- Foreign SIMs in Switzerland: we have not yet found a reliable source on permanent roaming. Details on the Switzerland page.
An M2M.global IoT SIM is not tied to a single network in a country, and its data can reach your cloud without the internet through private delivery.
