Teltonika FMB120: set the APN by SMS for an IoT SIM

Updated

To use an IoT SIM in the Teltonika FMB120, set its APN by SMS with parameter 2001 and turn off Auto APN with parameter 2025, then point it to your server with parameters 2004 and 2005. The FMB120 is a 2G-only tracker: it stops working wherever its operators switch 2G off.

Key facts

CellularGSM (2G), quad-band 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, GPRS
SIM2 slots, Micro-SIM + eSIM (datasheet)

Set the APN by SMS

SMS format: <SMS login><space><SMS password><space><command><space><value>. Without an SMS login and password, start the message with two spaces.

  setparam 2001:<apn>;2025:0
  setparam 2004:<server address>;2005:<port>

The first message sets the APN and turns off Auto APN; the second sets the address and port of your tracking server. Both are built from the parameter numbers below.

ParameterID
APN2001
APN user name2002
APN password2003
Server domain or IP2004
Server port2005
Protocol (0 = TCP, 1 = UDP)2006
Auto APN search2025 (0 = off, 1 = on)

The tracker switches between Home, Roaming and Unknown data acquisition modes: an operator in its roaming operator list means Roaming mode, the home operator (detected automatically) means Home mode, and any other operator means Unknown mode. A multi-network IoT SIM often lands in Roaming or Unknown mode: check the record and send periods set for those modes.

Send data to your server privately

With private delivery, set parameter 2004 to your server's private IP address: tracking data then travels from the SIM to your platform without crossing the internet, and the platform needs no public listening port.

Networks and shutdowns

The SIM: IoT SIM cards. Typical use: SIM card for GPS trackers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set the APN on the Teltonika FMB120 by SMS?

Send setparam 2001:<apn>;2025:0 (parameter 2001 is the APN, 2025 turns off Auto APN). Source: Teltonika wiki.

Does the Teltonika FMB120 work after 2G shutdowns?

No. The FMB120 uses 2G only, so it loses service where its operators switch 2G off. Choose an LTE model for new installations.
