5G RedCap (Reduced Capability)

Updated

RedCap is a 5G NR device type introduced in 3GPP Release 17 for wearables, industrial sensors and video surveillance. It uses a narrower bandwidth, up to 20 MHz in the lower frequency ranges, and fewer antennas than a 5G smartphone, which lowers cost and power use. Release 18 adds a simpler version called eRedCap.

In practice

RedCap works only on 5G standalone networks. Where an operator runs only non-standalone 5G, the device has to fall back to LTE, so check that the module supports LTE too and which networks offer 5G standalone in your countries.
