MQTT
Updated
MQTT is a lightweight publish and subscribe messaging protocol: devices publish messages on topics to a broker, and applications subscribe to the topics they need. It runs over TCP, usually with TLS, and version 5.0 is an OASIS standard.
In practice
MQTT keeps a TCP connection open, so a device behind NAT stays reachable for commands. The keep-alive interval is a trade-off between reactivity on one side and data and battery use on the other.
