TLS (Transport Layer Security)
Updated
TLS encrypts and authenticates connections over TCP, such as HTTPS and MQTT over TLS. Version 1.3 is defined in RFC 8446.
In practice
A TLS handshake with certificates often costs several kilobytes. On a device that reconnects every few minutes, that overhead can exceed the data itself; session resumption or longer-lived connections reduce it.
