2G and 3G shutdown dates, by country and operator
Updated
As of 26 October 2026, we track 187 mobile operators in 60 countries: 43 have switched off their 2G network and 101 their 3G network, 95 shutdowns are planned with a date or a year, and 72 statuses are still unclear. Each country page lists every operator with its sources.
Key takeaways
- Plan new devices on 4G-based radios: LTE Cat-1bis, LTE-M or NB-IoT.
- 3G closes first in most countries; 2G often survives longer for machines and emergency fallback.
- Multi-network SIMs buy time, not a solution: they move to an operator that still runs 2G until it closes too.
- The data is free to reuse: download the full table as CSV.

How we built this table
- Survey date: 26 October 2026. Each row also gives the date of its sources.
- Source preference: the operator’s own announcement or the national regulator first; then GSMA and trade press; IoT vendors’ trackers only when nothing better exists, and always marked.
- “Switched off” is used only when a source confirms the shutdown happened; a passed date without confirmation stays “planned”.
- Known gaps: some operators publish no plan, and some countries have no reliable public source yet; those rows are marked “unclear” rather than guessed.

Frequently asked questions
Why are operators switching off 2G and 3G?
To reuse the radio frequencies for 4G and 5G, which carry far more data per megahertz, and to stop maintaining old equipment. 3G usually goes first because 2G still serves many low-data machines and emergency fallback.
What happens to IoT devices when 2G or 3G is switched off?
A device whose modem only supports the switched-off network loses service, unless another operator in the country still runs that network and the SIM can use it. Devices with 4G-based modems (LTE Cat-1bis, LTE-M, NB-IoT) are not affected.
Which technology should replace 2G and 3G in IoT devices?
LTE-M or NB-IoT for low-power devices where those networks exist, and LTE Cat-1 or Cat-1bis where they do not, because Cat-1bis works on any 4G network.
Can an IoT SIM avoid a 2G shutdown by using another network?
Yes, temporarily. A multi-network IoT SIM can move to an operator that still runs 2G, which buys time until that operator closes its network too.
