Internet delivery, with a static public IP if you need one
Updated
With internet delivery, your devices reach any server on the internet through the mobile network, sharing public addresses by default; a static public IP is available for devices that must be reachable from outside. It is the simplest way to connect devices that talk to public cloud services. When devices must not be reachable from the internet, use private delivery instead.

Key points
- Default: outbound only. Devices can open connections to the internet; nobody outside can open one to them.
- Static public IP: inbound possible. Useful for remote access to a router or a camera, at the cost of exposure.
- Same SIM. Switching a SIM between internet and private delivery is a setting, not a new card.
Which delivery for which need
| Need | Choice |
|---|---|
| Devices send data to a public cloud endpoint (MQTT, HTTPS) | Internet delivery, default addressing |
| You must open a connection to the device from anywhere | Internet delivery with static public IP |
| Only your network or cloud must reach the device | Private delivery |
| Regulated data, industrial control, payment, cameras in fleets | Private delivery |
If you choose a static public IP
- Change every default password before connecting the device.
- Open only the ports you need, and restrict them to known source addresses when the device allows it.
- Keep firmware up to date.
- Monitor login attempts; cameras and routers exposed this way are scanned constantly (CISA on the Mirai botnet).

Frequently asked questions
Do IoT SIMs have a public IP address?
Not by default. With standard internet delivery, devices usually share public addresses through network address translation, so they can reach servers but cannot be reached from outside. A static public IP is an option for devices that must accept incoming connections.
When do I need a static public IP on a SIM?
When a server or a person on the internet must open a connection to the device, for example to reach a router's web interface. If only your own network needs to reach the device, private delivery is safer.
Is a static public IP risky?
It makes the device visible to the whole internet, where it will be scanned within minutes. Use it only with strong unique passwords, current firmware and strict filtering of the ports you open.
