Deliver IoT SIM traffic privately into Oracle Cloud
Updated
To deliver IoT SIM traffic privately into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, your SIMs use a private APN and their traffic reaches your virtual cloud network (VCN) over a FastConnect private virtual circuit, through a Dynamic Routing Gateway. Devices keep private addresses and are not reachable from the internet. An IPsec VPN to OCI is the quicker, internet-routed alternative.

Key points
- FastConnect private peering connects your network to VCNs on private IPv4 addresses, typically RFC 1918 ranges, through a Dynamic Routing Gateway attached to the VCN (FastConnect overview).
- BGP exchanges the SIM range and your VCN ranges.
- Partner connections come in 1, 10 or 100 Gbit/s increments, per Oracle.
Steps
- Create a Dynamic Routing Gateway, attach it to your VCN and reference it in the VCN route table.
- Create the FastConnect virtual circuit (private) for the location we indicate.
- Exchange BGP details as the connection model requires; we advertise your SIM range.
- Allow the SIM range in your security lists or network security groups.
- Test from a device: a private IP in your VCN must answer.

Frequently asked questions
How do cellular IoT devices reach an OCI virtual cloud network privately?
The SIMs use a private APN and their traffic reaches Oracle Cloud over a FastConnect private virtual circuit, which connects to your VCN through a Dynamic Routing Gateway, on private addresses.
Can I use an IPsec VPN instead of FastConnect?
Yes. It is quicker to set up and encrypted, but it crosses the public internet; FastConnect does not.
